adventures in securing cheap, reliable rural...
As I’ve mentioned before, my wife and I have been in the process of becoming more self sufficient. A big part of that is growing our own food, which up until now has meant gardening.
But we’ve had the desire to do more. So this summer, we sold our house and started looking for something more rural where we could do more gardening and get some chickens. And at some point, add in a...

monday's top 5
Week 2 of the new feature, here’s my top 5 from last week:
1) Acorn 2: Every time I open this app, I’m struck by how much the interface has improved and how enjoyable it is to use.
And while I can’t photoshop my way out of a wet paper bag, I’ve heard enough horror stories from the pro’s to believe that a lot of people could save themselves some pain by using a...

there's no prize for second place
At Fusion, we pride ourselves on trying to have the best looking ads on the internet. And we were doing good for a while. But now Jacob and the Tumblr crew are promoting their shirts on the Tumblr Dashboard.
Shazaam!
Dang. We just can’t compete with that.

note to self
Please make note of the various publishing options on tumblr:
‘Add to queue’ and ‘Publish on…’ are not the same thing. Thanks for listening!
But Wave tries to fix these problems by replacing e-mail with an entirely alien...

I’ve seen a lot of discussion in the last couple of years on where the interface between the human and the computer needs to go.
10/GUI is probably the best overall case I’ve seen yet. It’s a longer video, but worth the time.

monday's top 5
A new regular post for this space (regular for at least one week), every Monday I’ll be posting my top 5 items from the week previous.
The inaugural list:
1 - Spotify in Canada: a great way to explore new artists.
2 - OS X’s single application mode: much more friendly than Spaces in my mind and works well with Witch.
3 - Droplr: A really nice way to share stuff from your...

iWork '09 files are really .zip files, contain PDF...
finermac:
iWork files created from Pages, Numbers and Keynote are all really .zip files containing XML and plist files that describe the formatting. But more importantly, the files also include a PDF representation of the file. So, if someone sends a Pages file to a coworker that lacks the software (even a PC user), all one has to do is unzip the file to get a readable PDF.

gratuitous link to an interview of myself →
I was absolutely flattered when Nathan Smith asked to interview me a few months back for Godbit. He posted the short interview last night.
oatmeal promotes regularity
The Macalope gives us this great quote in a post today on Windows Mobile and Windows 7:
Even businesses, which make up the bulk of the XP blockage slowly wending its way through the bowels of the Windows upgrade path, must one day pass.
In this case, just substitute OS X in place of oatmeal.
If you’re a Mac developer, my message to you is the same: just because the...

a lonely morning
Sure was quiet today. For a brief moment, I thought my early morning decision to try green tea instead of the usual roast caused the issue, but apparently it wasn’t me.
In other news, I sure got a lot done today.

Nice find — it works very well. It even slowly rotates through the items in each folder.
