You Want to Eat It Too?
While discoursing on the subject of Flash again, Gruber says this about Apple: It boils down to control. I’ve written several times that I believe Apple controls the entire source code to iPhone OS. (No one has disputed that.) There’s no bug Apple can’t try to fix on their own. No performance problem they can’t try to tackle. No one they need to wait for. Yet Apple has shown no concern in this...

Computing Simplicity?
When I published my post titled, “Dear Mr. Jobs” last week, I heard a couple of comments about my “cluttered” menubar. It got me thinking about the current move towards minimalism and simplicity in regards to our digital tools. It’s a movement that I’m greatly in favour of. It has been wonderful to see a work like Patrick’s Minimal Mac receive so much attention and success. But...

Revised Font Stack
A Way Back posts a wonderful article on creating a better font stack. And for a non-professional who throws out a design or two every couple of months, building a nice font stack with already available fonts is still a better option than using some newer options such as font-face or a service like Typekit. I could read this stuff all day. [ via David Kaneda ]

Dear Mr. Jobs,
This is just a small taste of what I love about using a Mac. All the great developers who created these application make your product better. Please do the right thing and treat them like the professionals they are as you move us all down the path to touch computing and your closed marketplace. Sincerely yours, Devoted Mac ecosystem...

The Small Things
This will be such old news to all you long-time iPhone owners, but after a recent upgrade from my 1st gen iPod Touch to an iPhone 3GS, I have once again been reminded how well Apple gets the little things right. Previously I had the mentality that the iPod Touch is the iPhone without the phone. But there are a few others components on the iPhone that have been a nice addition. Obviously the...

TaskPaper for iPhone →
The iPhone complement to the simple-yet-extremely-powerful-and-flexible TaskPaper for OS X is now available in the App Store, and Patrick gives a sneak preview on Minimal Mac. I’ve been tempted in the past to use TaskPaper, mainly due to some of the reasons Patrick uses it himself: … as task/list applications go it is as basic as it gets without removing crucial functionality – thus...

On Crema
Yesterday I posted a question on Twitter that has plagued me for a while: why would someone who enjoys strong, black coffee order an Americano? I got some interesting responses, but nothing quite as good as the email I received from Joshua Longbrake, who happens to hail from Seattle — where else? — and has spent much time learning the fine art of the barista. He replied via Twitter and...

Overcoming Creative Block
Erik Spiekermann’s third step on getting through “creative block” in an interesting post on ISO50. 3. Research Look up stuff, go through your old projects, but avoid Google — it takes too long to find anything useful… I love the comment about Google — I feel this is such a sign of the time. Ten years ago, Google was a revelation and a new way to find useful information. Now it’s...

Graphic Work on OS X
I’m blessed with ability to spend more time practicing and learning in the broad field of web design. A big hurdle for me in the past is graphics — I don’t know Photoshop from a hole in the ground. And so I’ve set out to educate myself in this area as well. I started out by asking for recommendations for the best tool to start with on Twitter. Since I happen to have some...

The App Store Nightmare Hasn't Gone Away
There has been a lot of interesting, insightful and intelligent discourse on the iPad over the past 5 days. Much of which has been provided by people who have not even seen this device in ‘the flesh’. I can appreciate thoughts such as this one provided by Fraser Speirs in his piece titled, “Future Shock”: If the iPad and its successor devices free these people to focus on what they do best, it...
