On the argument of whether good design is purely invisible (gets out of the way), or whether aesthetics can be considered good design as well, Rian van der Merwe has this to say:

Instead of striving for purely invisible design, or design that is “stunningly, beautiful visible” but unusable, our aim should be to balance the decisions we make and the aesthetic we choose to arrive at a state of appropriate visibility.
