I have a dilemma: on a personal side project, I have the choice of using a payment gateway that keeps the users strictly on my site throughout the entire process. There is also the choice of using PayPal so that the user goes to an external PayPal page, with the option of returning to my site once the transaction is complete.
At first, I thought it was vital to have the first option — which, of course, costs more. But I thought about my own habits when online shopping. I’ve used sites that employ either method and I’m comfortable with either. But I most likely do not represent the average consumer who may use this site I’m building.
I’d love to hear what other designers, developers, and online shoppers think about this. What do you say — is it essential to keep the potential shopper on your page?

Tumblr users aren’t exactly “average people”. I’d imagine “average people” would be fine with Paypal though, because they’ll have heard of it

Keeping the customer on your site is a great, however consumers know (generally) that Paypal is secure and safe, which could be beneficial..

PayPal. Many users can login to their account and purchase in a couple clicks. Others can still do the same CC# flow, but on PayPal’s site.

Having the first option is important; sales increased 20% when I added a payment gateway. Some people absolutely hate PayPal.

PayPal offers a “gateway” thru Website Payments Pro. So you can use that and not have users leave your site. Personally, I prefer that flow.

I think that Paypal offers a decent amout of psychological security to the user…sometimes I’m *more* likely to buy if I see a Paypal page.

Depends on the audience. My parents, cousins, etc. don’t know paypal well so the other option would be more desirable.

Internet savvy people will be fine going to Paypal, it may hurt conversion for random folks from SEO/SEM.

I don’t think it’s essential. If I’m going to PayPal to buy your product, that means I’m already interested in what your web site offers.

when I buy software or something like that that uses paypal, I have no problem leaving the page. Paypal keeps things transparent.

If I don’t know the site I’m buying from, I’m much more comfortable with Paypal. It feels like a barrier against scams.

PayPal doesn’t seem to give a very good user experience to me. Often it makes you believe that you have to use an account, which is annoying.

The external PayPal page would work better for me. Known brand, known process, muscle memory, etc.

I like a seamless transaction, if it’s affordable enough. Also, Paypal scares me a bit. I use it a lot, but not for accepting payments.

I am comfortable with either. I think most are used to such things these days.

I’ve gone through some checkout processes and PayPal is absolut ok. I’ve seen PayPal pages with custom design header, so this is a option.

Authorize.net or PaySimple are both ones I’ve used and find to be excellent solutions. Worth the cost for a seamless transaction.
